‘Youth Aware of Mental Health’ (YAM) is a universal mental health promotion for young people, developed by interdisciplinary researchers in public mental health and psychiatry from the world-leading Karolinska Institute and Columbia University. The Centre has been commissioned by the UK Government’s Department for Education to implement and evaluate the intervention in the UK.

We are recruiting for a number of YAM Assistant Facilitators to co-facilitate delivering of YAM to Year 9 secondary school pupils in the Spring term of 2023 (January to April). YAM is a five-week programme delivered through one-hour sessions over five consecutive weeks. Delivering the YAM programme will involve approaching sensitive topics such as depression, anxiety, and suicidal thoughts with young people, facilitating role-plays, and exploring ways of supporting young people to reflect on and problem-solve emotionally charged situations and dilemmas. Clinical experience is not required for the role, more important is the YAM Assistant Facilitator’s ability to build alliances and reciprocal relationships with a diverse range of young people.

We are recruiting YAM Assistant Facilitators who are willing and able to work in and around one or more of the following areas (travel expenses will be covered):

  • Kent
  • Surrey
  • London
  • Herts/Essex

YAM Assistant Facilitators will be required to travel to deliver YAM sessions to Year 9 pupil groups in secondary schools who have been selected to part in the randomised controlled trial AWARE (Approaches for Wellbeing and Mental Health LiterAcy: Research in Education). The post-holders should therefore be willing to travel and have the availability to work for at least one day per week during school hours in the 2023 school Spring term.

Each full course of YAM will consist of five weekly one-hour sessions delivered to the same pupil group each week across a period of five consecutive weeks and will include preparation for and debriefing after sessions. The number of YAM courses to be delivered by each YAM Assistant Facilitators is negotiable, although post-holders will be required to commit to delivering at least three full courses (15 sessions in total). This will require a commitment of at least one day per week. We will work with the timetables of the schools and the availability of each individual post-holder in order to create bespoke delivery schedules.

Please indicate in your application which locations, days (Monday to Friday) and times (AM/PM) you will be available during January 2023 to April 2023. As the same YAM Instructor must be used for each session involved in the five-week course, no leave can be taken on the days assigned to delivery during the Spring term.

Post-holders will also be required to attend a one-day training course based in London on either 27 October or 2 November 2022. Training will be delivered by Anna Freud Centre, School Engagement Trainers, who are also trained YAM Instructors. Attendees will be paid for training at a rate of £88.61 for the day. Necessary travel costs will be covered.

Contract duration

Interview/Selection Process

Shortlisted applicants will be required to attend an online interview on either Tuesday 13 September, Thursday 15 September or Friday 16 September 2022. Please indicate in your application which interview dates you would be able to attend. Any offer of employment will be dependent on successful completion of the one-day training course in October/November 2022.
